After so many years of hurt, England won the World Cup for the first time in 1966 when the under 20s side took home the trophy, beating Venezuela 1-0 courtesy of Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s strike.
The Young Lions’ success in the tournament attracted the country’s interest and more and more people tuned into the tournament as the side progressed. With increasing focus on the sides competing, it was a greater chance for some of the younger players to shine, knowing good performances could lead to a big-money move.
There’s a history of players catching the eye on the international stage and earning those marquee signings: Holland’s famous U21 side that won the Euros ended up spread across Europe’s top leagues, for instance. And there’s a good chance we’ll see more of those stars who lit up the u20 World Cup doing the same.
