With Suicide Squad now wrapped and firmly in the heavy marketing stage, David Ayer is still teasing details on his social media. The latest release confirms the existence of ARGUS as well as plans for something called NHEJCO (Non-Human Entity Joint Combat Operations).
Basically, think of ARGUS as DC’s equivalent of SHIELD, which was introduced by The New 52 and is led in the comics by Amanda Waller and Steve Trevor (who of course is being played by Chris Pine in Wonder Woman). The ARGUS logo is seen below on the front of the plans…
Suicide Squad has had various bosses in the comics, but it would appear that the film will follow the New 52 and have Taskforce X deployed by the covert military organization ARGUS, under their NEJCO project.
Much like Captain America: The First Avenger set up the formation of SHIELD (and the new defunct Agent Carter series), it looks like Wonder Woman (or its sequels) could introduce ARGUS as the government agency specifically tied to superhero activity. Perhaps Pine’s Trevor and Wonder Woman herself will be introduced as the founders of the group (or at least founding members) – basically forming DC’s version of the Howling Commandoes group (as teased by that photo in BvS).
Inevitably, their vision for the group will no doubt be mangled by Waller’s plan to use super villains rather than super-heroes. And how reductive is the use of the word “non-humans” there? It’s almost like they’re fundamentally considered second class citizens. Very X-Men-like that.
