A brand new trailer for Star Trek: Beyond has just dropped and, in true new-age Trekkie fashion, it sports exploding spaceships, colourful laser beams and a whole bunch of wacky alien folk.
This time around to guide us through the snippets of intergalactic shenanigans we’re ‘treated’ to a performance of Rhianna’s new single Sledgehammer, rather than the J.J. Abrams approved banger of Sabotage by the Beastie Boys.
The new trailer features extensive looks at both Krall and Jaylah, two of our new extraterrestrial characters played by Idris Elba and Sofia Boutella. As well as more footage of familiar Starfleet faces including Chris Pine, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, John Cho, Zachary Quinto, Simon Pegg and Chris Pine. None of which will do anything to really dispel the fan apathy that’s emerged from the other two uninspiring trailers.
Through a dramatic voice over from Kirk, some links to the plot are made including mentions of an unknown threat and his apparent resignation as Captain of the Enterprise. But that happens in every movie right? The hallmarks of Fast & Furious director Justin Lin are also more apparent, with some frankly spectacular vehicular stunt work.
Star Trek: Beyond is set to open in theatres on July 22 and will play in Real 3D and IMAX 3D. Let us know your thoughts in the comments thread.
